What are white Pearl Onions?

White pearl onions are small, round bulbs of the common onion (Allium cepa), harvested young and sold with thin, papery white skin. They are a cool-climate crop grown mainly in Europe and the Mediterranean region, and they reach the UAE as imported fresh produce. The Fresh Boxes supply them in Dubai for home cooks, restaurants, and caterers.

Why Cooks Prefer Pearl Onions

A pearl onion is usually about 2 to 3 cm across, firm to the touch, with a pale, crisp centre. The taste is milder and slightly sweeter than a regular brown onion, so it adds flavour without dominating the dish. Because the bulbs are close in size, they cook evenly, which helps when you are roasting a full tray or preparing a stew for a large group. White pearl onions also keep their shape during long cooking, so they look as good as they taste.

Ways to Cook and Serve Them

To peel them easily, blanch in boiling water for one minute, cool, and squeeze the skins off. Then try:

• Butter-glazed with a little sugar as a side dish
• Pickled in vinegar for salads, sandwiches, and cheese boards
• Roasted whole with olive oil and thyme
• Simmered in beef stew, chicken casserole, or creamy sauces

They also pair well with blistered Pimiento Padron chillies from Spain when you want sweet and mild heat on one plate.

Storage and Delivery

Keep unpeeled onions in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot, in a breathable bag or basket, away from sunlight and moisture. Once peeled, store them in an airtight container in the fridge and use within a few days.
